Some Notes About Pen Work
|
|
If you have questions please e-mail me. I will be more than glad to answer
any questions you have.
As I state in my bio, on the home page, your pens are as important to me
as they are to you. I treat every pen I work on as if it were going into my own personal collection. I want your pens to perform as well as I can. The proof is where the pen meets the paper. My work is also about preserving writing instruments, and in improving their appearance. If you do not wish to have the exterior of your pens improved, that is fine with me. I do not always work on the outside of my own pens. Some pens just have a certain appeal and character in how they appear. Maybe like an old pair of shoes, or a favorite old pair of jeans.
Gold Plating - I offer replating on gold trimmed parts, and other parts, as
a service, but I do not recommend it. Most often the gold trim on better quality vintage pens was made from rolled gold or gold filled, both of which have a fairly heavy layer of solid gold that was fused to base metal. Replated gold is much thinner than what is on the original parts, and the new gold tends to wear rather quickly on replated areas, where there had been brass showing before. If you insist I will do it for you, it's your choice.
Recoloring Black Hard Rubber - Another service I offer. This is also a
controversial and sometimes questionable "fix" on black hard rubber pens. I have done it to a very few of my own pens and a few for my custormers. I will clearly state here, I do not like recoloring BHR pens. It is permanent, and leaves an unnatural semi-gloss finish on the pens. Again, it is not something I recommend as a solution to the problem of corrosion on hard rubber. On the other hand, it does look nice on Parker Duofold cap and barrel ends. I will do it if the customer insists.
Resaccing Pens (New Bladder) and Nib Work - This is not just a matter
of washing off the nib and sticking a new ink sac on. The nib, section and feed are disassembled, thoroughly cleaned, and inspected. The nibs and feeds are adjusted as needed, tip halves are realigned, if needed. Worn tips are sometimes reground, if it needs to be done. If a nib, or any other part, has a severe problem I will contact you about it.
I do not generally sell parts for vintage or especially modern pens. Ink
sacs (bladders), and other internal rubber parts ARE supplied and included as part of the restoration process. I do not sell ink sacs for others to replace when performing their own repairs. If you need rubber internal parts e-mail me and I will gladly pass on the contact informantion where they can be purchased. Unfortunately I do not have time to track down other parts for your pens. If you send a pen which needs one or more parts you must supply the parts needing to be replaced. When I have parts for sale I will list them on a special page on this website.
I do not usually work on modern pens. If you need manufacturer's contact
information I can help you with that. It's not a problem, and I'm happy to help you in that regard.
When sending pens for repair please refer to my "Shipping Policy"
information page. It will be helpful to you and me. |
